If you’re a freelance developer, QA tester, student, or simply someone who’s comfortable testing websites and Android apps, I recently came across a couple of freelance testing opportunities that may be worth checking out.
Both Fliprly and NRI Dating appear to be looking for people who can help test their web and Android platforms.
What does the work involve?
App and website testing can be a fairly accessible way to pick up some additional freelance work, particularly if you already spend a lot of time using different websites and mobile apps.
You generally don’t need to build anything. Instead, the work can involve going through different parts of a website or Android app, trying features as a normal user would, and reporting anything that doesn’t work as expected.
That might include checking things such as:
- Registration and login
- Profile creation and editing
- Navigation and user interface issues
- Forms and validation
- Search and other interactive features
- Android behaviour on different devices
- Broken links or unexpected errors
- Layout problems on different screen sizes
- General usability issues
When you find a problem, you’ll normally need to explain how you encountered it and provide screenshots or screen recordings where appropriate.
Flexible freelance work
One of the nice things about this type of work is its flexibility. Testing can often be completed remotely and around your existing schedule, making it potentially useful for students, developers between projects, or freelancers looking for smaller pieces of work.
It’s also relatively easy to get started if you’re already technically minded. You don’t necessarily need to be a professional QA engineer to spot a button that doesn’t work, a page that breaks on mobile, or a feature that behaves differently from what a user would expect.
For experienced testers, there is also plenty of opportunity to go deeper by testing edge cases and systematically trying to reproduce bugs.
A way to earn some extra money
This isn’t the sort of freelance work that’s going to make you rich overnight, but smaller testing jobs can be a handy way of earning some extra money without committing to a large development project.
It can also be useful experience for anyone interested in moving into software testing, QA, Android development, or web development. Understanding how real users break software is surprisingly valuable when you eventually start building your own.
Fliprly and NRI Dating
The two platforms I came across are Fliprly and NRI Dating, both operating in the online dating space.
NRI Dating is aimed particularly at NRIs, OCIs, PIOs and the wider Indian diaspora looking for dating, relationships and marriage. You can find the platform at NRI Dating.
If you already own a few Android devices, that’s potentially even more useful because developers often need their apps tested across different manufacturers, Android versions and screen sizes.
Worth keeping an eye on
Freelance testing is one of those smaller online opportunities that’s easy to overlook. You aren’t committing yourself to months of development work, and individual assignments can be relatively straightforward.
If you’re comfortable exploring apps, documenting bugs clearly and providing useful feedback, opportunities like these could be an interesting way to earn a few extra bucks while building some practical testing experience at the same time.
As with any freelance opportunity, check the current job requirements, payment terms and eligibility directly with the company before starting any work.
